LORD COCONUT – NOW OPEN
(Released 1 May 2011)
Lord Coconut is now open on Level 4, Carlow House, Flinders Lane. This hidden treasure is Melbourne’s only retailer, gallery, and online boutique selling contemporary jewellery, cufflinks and art designed exclusively for men. The store features works by over 25 Melbourne jewellers, designers and artisans.
Upon entering this Aladdin’s cave of contemporary jewellery it is exciting to see the depth and range on offer for the discerning male, all made by talented Melbourne jewellers and designers.
Products include: cufflinks, rings, necklaces, tie pins, lapel pins, mooches (brooches for men), earrings, bracelets/cuffs and selected artwork/objects.
The store has over 300 individual designs in stock at any one time and all jewellers, designers and artisans are able to create one off pieces for the ultimate bespoke piece of jewellery.
“The opening of this store has been long anticipated in Melbourne’s artisan community,” said owner Mark Boldiston. “A year of preparation has included meeting with and sourcing designers and even convincing well known local jewellers with no products targeting men to create new lines for Lord Coconut.”
Regarding the interior, Mark explains, ”The store design is inspired by 19th century natural history museums and is filled with objects of wonder; West African masks, stalactites and Indian carvings, right through to taxidermy such as foxes and preserved crocodile paws.” These unique object d’arts are also available for sale.
Lord Coconut is named after a member of the British aristocracy who came to Melbourne via Easter Island. It was there in 1884 that he was infamously dubbed ‘Lord Coconut’, after pretending to know the native language of the Islanders, but upon demonstration he was pelted with coconuts by the locals to the delight of fellow travellers. We hear of Lord Coconut again in 1891 when The Argus newspaper heralded the opening of ‘Lord Coconut’s Emporium of Wonder’ in Melbourne.
Lord Coconut is now open, Mark Boldiston and various designers are available for interviews. The store is also available for photo shoots upon request.
