Drawing inspiration from a childhood filled with origami, science fiction, puzzles and vintage toys, Justin uses both precious metals and contemporary materials to make his creations. He relishes technical challenges and treats the act of making as a puzzle in itself, finding the best design solution to produce objects that are both entertaining and functional. His latest work focuses on the efficient use of materials. Using principles that are akin to the design of origami models, Justin starts with a single rectangular strip of metal, into which a design is hand –cut and then folded to produce a three dimensional piece. These self-imposed rules create the challenge of finding the many limbs, mandibles and wings in the material as well as achieving the ultimate goal of minimising waste. Justin’s full insect jewellery range includes cufflinks, brooches, lapel pins and are also available from Lord Coconut. Lord Coconut, the store, is named after a member of the British aristocracy who came to Melbourne via Easter Island. It was there in 1884 that he was infamously dubbed ‘Lord Coconut’, after pretending to know the native language of the Islanders, but upon demonstration he was pelted with coconuts by the locals to the delight of fellow travellers. We hear of Lord Coconut again in 1891 when The Argus newspaper heralded the opening of ‘Lord Coconut’s Emporium of Wonder’ in Melbourne. Lord Coconut is now open, Mark Boldiston and Justin Siow are available for interviews. High Resolution photos available upon request. Lord Coconut is a successful recipient of the City of Melbourne Small Business Grants program.
