Swell (fordite) ring by Sebastian Cilento
Fordite or Detroit Agate is a by-product of painting automobiles at the Ford Motor Plant in the 1960′s. Layer after layer of paint would collect on racks after each automobile was painted. Each layer was baked on the rack (with the car) and hardened. This process was repeated over and over again creating banded and eye formations in the paint globs that resemble the pattern in fine agates. This material has since become very popular for jewellery and has great lapidary and historic interest. The paints displayed are true 1960′s era colours cut from true 1960′s era rough. Like an exhausted mineral deposit, all that is on the market is all there will ever be, ensuring a collectible future for this material. A ring size chart is available HERE
Due to the handmade nature of these rings slight variations will occur with the fordite as a new ring is made to your size upon receipt of your order.
