Uitreo viventem by Catherine Stringer as part of the VITROFORM exhibition
Uitreo viventem is an alien deep sea creature which evolved from a mutant test tube. This handmade paper artwork was inspired by the extraordinary other-worldly appearance of many marine invertebrates. It was created from multiple different marine microalgae (seaweeds) which were processed individually to preserve their varying colours and textures, and then combined in a single sheet of paper to form the main body. This was then gently shaped and finished with a stiffening medium and UV protective varnish. The tentacles were made separately and attached to the test tube with silk threads which had been incorporated into the papers.
